Minnesotans to Demand Action on COVID-19, Tax Increases On Super Wealthy to Keep Minnesotans Healthy
Ahead of the November forecast where state officials will give an update on Minnesota’s budget situation, a coalition of community, faith, and labor groups - mobilized under the banner of We Make Minnesota - issued the following statement:
“Whether it’s frontline workers committed to saving lives and caring for people’s health, or average folks masking up and staying home to protect ourselves and each other, Minnesotans pull through by pulling together. Throughout the challenges from the pandemic this year, most Minnesotans have shown – including by voting in record numbers – that we are ready to build a state where we all can be safe and healthy. But instead of pitching in their fair share to help, the richest among us have profited from this crisis while leaving working families behind.
“We know how certain politicians and those at the top work to divide us by race, religion and where we live to keep us from coming together to create a state where every one of us, no exceptions, has what we need to thrive. They’ll tell us we don’t have enough to care for each other. They’ll say we need to go backwards, cutting essential services to protect the wealthiest among us. No matter what our budget situation turns out to be, Minnesotans have made clear we want leaders to make sure our families are healthy, our schools are funded and we all have basic needs like food and shelter met. We face many challenges in the years ahead, and as we make decisions about our budget (the moral document we use to care for one another) in the coming months, it’s time the wealthy and corporations pay their fair share to help build a Minnesota that works for all of us.”
